Then my son joined the Marines.
He was deployed to the Middle East, and because he wasn’t allowed to say exactly where, I spent months not fully knowing. Our communication came in fragments — rare phone calls, a FaceTime once a month if we were lucky, and emails I read more times than I’d like to admit. To stay connected across time zones I switched every clock I owned to military time. That’s how 1:13 in the afternoon became 13:13 — and how 13:13 became the number I couldn’t stop seeing.
On the clock. On receipts. On license plates. Every day, through one of the most frightening stretches of my life.
My first reaction was dread. I’d grown up hearing that 13 was bad luck, and when your son is in a combat zone, an unlucky number following you everywhere is the last thing you want.
